Golf World Cover Story on the Sankaty Head Caddie Camp

Golf World Cover Story on the Sankaty Head Caddie Camp

It’s not often that the story you are working on partially burns to the ground. That’s exactly what happened while we were photographing the last caddie camp in the USA on the charming island of Nantucket. We were documenting the last few days of the annual summer camp, which dates back to 1930, when a [...]

September Issue of Good Housekeeping Runs Maja Kazazic and Sally Becker’s Reunion Images

September Issue of Good Housekeeping Runs Maja Kazazic and Sally Becker's Reunion Images

Last November we photographed the emotional reunion of Maja Kazazic and Sally Becker in Tampa. Seventeen years ago Sally, a rescue worker, risked her own life in bringing Maja out of war-torn Bosnia so that Maya could receive adequate care for injuries she’d suffered when a grenade took her legs and threatened her life. The September issue of Good Housekeeping Magazine ran a series of photographs we made during their first encounter since. Sally flew in from England to Tampa where Maja lives. Working as a team was a huge benefit for us in being able to stage ourselves from two angles when the women embraced in the airport terminal after so many years. We were able to get both reactions and the magazine ran a nice series of four images from that moment.

Our First Shoot in Colorado is Our First Portrait Session for VIV Magazine

We’re betting that eventually we’ll be busy during our annual escape from Florida, as summer is the busy season for photo shoots in Colorado. We felt that reality come a little closer with a fun portrait assignment for VIVmag in July for their September/October issue. It was our first experience with the different mindset that is shooting for a digital magazine and our first shoot in Colorado.

We were assigned a last-minute shoot for a Golf World feature on the evolving personality of Nick Faldo. Since most of our shoots with the recently knighted golfer have been brief, we invested heavily in scouting and planning with our editor Christian Iooss. We were pleased with the result: two full page portraits opening the piece by Jim Moriarty in the April Issue.

Photographing Senior Tour Rookie Jim Roy for Golf Digest

Our relationship with Golf World and Golf Digest has given us the opportunity to work on lots of cool stories, but it’s hard to top that of Jim Roy. Last fall, the 50 year old quit his day-job in an attempt to qualify for the Champion’s Tour. He earned the final spot at Q-School in a playoff, becoming one of a few amateurs to ever go pro after a lifetime of weekend tee-times. He debuted at the ACE Group Classic in Naples, Florida. We were assigned to cover his debut and make some portraits of Roy, a man that gives hope to every amateur golfer hoping to beat crazy odds.

We had a great time making portraits of Dr. Richie-Melvan for a cover of the alumni magazine of her alma mater. She is remembered at Wagner College as the school’s first black homecoming queen, elected in 1971. Now as a retired Army Col., who has served as a White House Fellow, she is working on a book about army nurses.

Making Portraits of Tony Jacklin for Golf World Magazine

Making Portraits of Tony Jacklin for Golf World Magazine

It was a pleasure to meet and photograph Tony Jacklin for Al Barkow’s Golf World piece looking back on how Jacklin’s Open title lead to a European golf revival. We met Mr. Jacklin at his home in Bradenton, FL and first worked a few angles in his den, which could probably be called a “Man Cave,” were it not so classy and comfortable.

Jim Furyk puts on a Clown Costume for Golf World Cover

Jim Furyk puts on a Clown Costume for Golf World Cover

It’s always around 5:25pm on a Friday when the text comes across the mobile. “U and Jen available Monday for a shoot in Jax?” One thing we love is pulling off the impossible. We would soon learn that the subject would be Jim Furyk, whom the writer claimed was willing to wear a clown costume for a cover portrait. Now, it’s hard to get a professional golfer of Jim’s caliber to let you take his picture without a sponsor’s shirt or hat on, so after we asked our editor if we had heard him correctly, we got busy.

Miracle Man Erik Compton for Golf World Magazine

Miracle Man Erik Compton for Golf World Magazine

After getting his first heart transplant at age 12, Erik Compton focused everything on becoming a golf professional. Unfortunately transplants don’t last forever and last year, at age 27, he suffered a major heart attack while fly fishing. As Compton drove himself to the emergency room he called family and friends to say goodbye. Doctors were able to stabilize him, but his weakened heart would need to be replaced once again. On May 20, 2008, Erik received a second transplant, and now he is doing things he never thought possible, including becoming a father. We got to spend some time with him making images for Golf World.
