Personal Work at California’s Point Lobos and Big Sur

When we found out we’d be working at Pebble Beach we decided we’d be crazy not to add on a few days to explore and photograph the area of Big Sur.  We were right and completely floored by the beauty of Point Lobos in particular which we visited on the recommendation of a friend. [...]

Land Camera Polaroids from New York

Land Camera Polaroids from New York

Shooting black and white instant film with a 48 year-old rangefinder is the ultimate catharsis for a working photographer in the year 2011. . . .

Discovery Shuttle Launch Photographed from Mosquito Lagoon

Discovery Shuttle Launch Photographed from Mosquito Lagoon

We had a lot of fun watching and making pictures of the last Discovery shuttle launch from Mosquito Lagoon. The tide was lower than the last time we watched from there, which made for a nice sand bar where . . .

Volunteer Photography for Flashes of Hope at Disney Children's Hospital

Our second shoot for Flashes of Hope, a nonprofit organization “that changes the way children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses see themselves through the gift of photography and raises money for pediatric cancer research,” took place at Disney Children’s Hospital at Florida Hospital. Several of the children scheduled to be photographed were either too sick to come down to the studio we created, or overstimulated in that situation. For us it was not a problem as we were able to shoot in the documentary way we enjoy most.

Hobbling Ourselves in Yosemite National Park

Hobbling Ourselves in Yosemite National Park

We got pretty inspired watching the Ken Burns documentary series on our national parks. We decided visiting Yosemite was in order since we were headed to California anyway. It’s not clear if Yosemite is always busy, or if lots of other people enjoyed the series, but campsites sold out in thirty seconds, five months out.

Volunteer Shoot for Flashes of Hope at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children

The mission of Flashes of Hope is simple. “Our goal is to photograph every child until every child is cured.” We had the chance to help support them in that mission at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children by photographing children with life threatening illnesses and their families over the course of a morning and donating the imagery. In the process we got to meet some amazing, inspiring people.

Photographing Manatees of Florida’s St. Johns River

Winter in Florida is the best time in Florida. We took advantage of a clear, crisp morning to head out on the St. Johns River with our good friend and colleague Darcy Sang, of Pearl Beach Paperie and her mom. We made some images and met some new friends while we were out- curious manatees who inspected our kayaks.

The photography workshop is tuition-free, and the 100 students are chosen based on the merit of their portfolios.”

Photographing the End of Summer in the Never Summers

Photographing the End of Summer in the Never Summers

Our time out in Colorado was wrapped up with a short backpacking trip up to the American Lakes in the Never Summer Range to the northwest of Rocky Mountain National Park. It was mostly a last chance to spend time with family and fly fish for some beautiful cutthroats, but of course we made pictures

Personal Work Photographing the Beartooth Mountains of Montana and Devils Tower in Wyoming

Driving from Florida to Colorado didn’t seem quite far enough so we headed straight up to Montana for a backpacking trip in the Beartooth Mountains. What is it about birthdays in the early thirties that makes one want to do something physically impossible? Like, say hike 26 miles at 10,000 feet in three days, with camera gear. As we said on the trek, “Sometimes you have to just keep putting one bloody stump in front of the other.”

Fun with Film in the Four Corners Region

Fun with Film in the Four Corners Region

We spent some time camping out West making some scenic imagery for ourselves while en route to a wedding in Southwest Colorado. We started in New Mexico and worked our way over 1300 miles in a not-so-square tour through the four corners region.

Photographing Space Shuttle Discovery Launch Via Kayak in Mosquito Lagoon

When we bought our tandem Hobie Kayak, one of our dream uses for it was to watch a nighttime shuttle launch from Mosquito lagoon. We decided that though the night launch was scrapped, a magic hour launch would be just fine.

Personal Travel Project in Italy – Rome and Umbria Photography

Personal Travel Project in Italy – Rome and Umbria Photography

We spent late August and early September touring parts of Italy and visiting with family there. We started with all the major sights of Rome and worked our way up to Umbria, Tuscany’s less-popular little sister. In Rome we felt more local by renting a little house in the Trastevere area and in Umbria we had the opportunity to enjoy a relative’s amazing hill-top villa.
